Santao Antao, Cape Verde

“The most northerly, the most westerly and the most spectacularly beautiful, Santo Antao is also the most “off-the-beaten” track and historically isolated of all of the Cape Verde islands.” – Luddtke

Santa Antão has several things going for it. First of all it said to be the most scenic of the Cape Verde islands with its dramatic mountain ridge forming a central spine in stunning contrast to the deep verdant valleys which make such ideal outings for hikers and ramblers.

Then there is the rum… Cape Verdian rum is to be had on all the islands of curse, but nowhere will you find it sweeter than in Santa Antão.

The most western of the Cape Verde islands, Santa Antão is volcanic in nature and the mountains create a climate divide with arid conditions to the southeast and normal rainfall to the northwest.

There are three municipalites; Paul, Porto Novo and Riberia Grande.
